Chapter 1 - The Blue Mat
The industrial warehouse gym was suffocatingly hot, filled with the heavy scent of sweat and leather. Under the harsh, buzzing industrial lighting, the tension on the blue wrestling mat had just reached a lethal breaking point.
Gia, a twenty-something athletic coach with her brunette hair tied in a messy updo, wore a simple burgundy athletic top and black leggings. But she wasn't a fragile civilian. With a sudden, explosive burst of leverage, she swept the legs of the most dangerous man in the city.
Mateo hit the blue mat with a deafening thud.
He was a man in his forties, highly muscular, shirtless, with extensive, terrifying tattoos sprawling across his arms and chest. He was the feared boss of the city’s underground fighting syndicate. And he was currently pinned face-down by a woman half his size.
Instantly, the heavy metal doors slammed open. Four massive guards in tight black shirts rushed toward the mat, pulling batons from their belts.
"Get off him!" the lead guard roared, sprinting toward Gia with absolute, violent intent.
Gia completely ignored the charging men. She didn't flinch. Instead, she leaned her weight down, pressing her hand firmly and clinically against Mateo's rigid, heavily tattooed upper back. Her expression shifted from adrenaline-fueled combat to cold, sharp analysis.
She leaned down, her lips inches from his ear. She looked into his dark, furious eyes with calm certainty.
"You haven't slept properly in years," Gia said quietly.
Mateo’s entire muscular frame went completely rigid. He raised one single finger into the air.
Instantly, the four charging guards stopped dead in their tracks, freezing like statues around the mat.
Mateo stared up at the young coach, his face shifting rapidly from violent anger to absolute, paralyzing shock.
