Chapter 4 - The Localized Poison

Isabella’s chest heaved with fury. She glared venomously at Gia, making a silent, lethal promise before spinning on her expensive heels and storming back up the metal stairs. The guards silently filed out of the room, closing the heavy warehouse doors behind them.
Mateo and Gia were completely alone under the buzzing industrial lights.
"You said it isn't an injury," Mateo said, crossing his heavily tattooed arms. "What is it?"
Gia took a deep breath. She knew that stepping into this world was a death sentence if she played her cards wrong. But she was here for justice, and she had to be bold.
"It's a localized neurotoxin," Gia stated clearly. "Someone is poisoning you, Mateo."
Mateo laughed, a harsh, humorless sound. "Impossible. My food is prepared by a private chef and tasted by my guards. My water is sealed. If I were being poisoned, I would be dead."
"Not if they don't want you dead yet," Gia countered, her eyes piercing through his arrogant defense. "If they kill you outright, your lieutenants take over the empire. But if you slowly become paralyzed, if you are deemed medically unfit to rule... your power legally transfers to your next of kin. Or your future wife."
Mateo stopped breathing. The cinematic realism of the moment crashed over him.
"The toxin isn't in your food," Gia explained, stepping closer. "It's transdermal. It's being absorbed through your skin. Directly into your spine. Think about it. What goes on your back every single night before you try to sleep?"
Mateo stared at her, the blood turning to absolute ice in his veins.

"My liniment oil," Mateo whispered, his voice cracking. "Isabella rubs a custom muscle relaxant into my shoulders every night."
