Chapter 7 - The Brother's Secret

Dante’s face violently drained of all color. He slowly lowered his weapon, raising his free hand in surrender.

"Boss... I was just following protocol," Dante stammered, sweating profusely. "She had a gun!"

"You pulled a Beretta 9mm from her bag," Mateo stated smoothly, his dark eyes radiating lethal intelligence. "My security scanners at the front door are calibrated to detect the specific magnetic signature of a Beretta's firing pin. The alarms never went off when she walked in. Which means that gun was already inside the building."

Dante swallowed hard, realizing he was completely, inescapably trapped.

"Who paid you to plant it?" Mateo demanded, stepping closer.

Dante didn't answer. He lunged forward, trying to raise his weapon, but Mateo moved with explosive, blinding speed. He struck Dante across the jaw with the heavy grip of his gun, sending the corrupt guard crashing into the concrete floor, unconscious.

Mateo turned to Gia. He offered his large, tattooed hand and helped her up from the cold floor.

"You aren't just a random coach, are you?" Mateo asked quietly. "Why did you really come here, Gia?"

Gia took a shaky breath, rubbing her bruised arms. The moment of truth had finally arrived.

"Two years ago," Gia whispered, tears of profound grief filling her eyes, "you had a private physical therapist named Leo. He was my older brother."

Mateo’s breath hitched. Leo had been his most trusted doctor, until he was suddenly caught stealing from the syndicate vault and was executed by Dante.

"Leo didn't steal from you, Mateo," Gia cried softly. "He found out that Isabella was poisoning your massage oil. She framed him to keep him quiet."
