Chapter 5 - The Nursing Home Secret

"You told me she was dead," Daniel whispered coldly, his voice echoing perfectly across the dead-silent entryway.
Victoria’s face turned violently pale. "Daniel, please! I thought she was! The police told me they couldn't find her! I swear to God, she must have been living on the streets!"
Daniel didn't scream. His quietness was infinitely more terrifying.
He reached gently into his grandmother's worn cardigan pocket. He pulled out a crumpled, dirty piece of paper. It wasn't a map of the streets. It was a formal, stamped discharge receipt from "Shady Pines"—the absolute cheapest, most notoriously abusive, underfunded state nursing home in the entire city.
The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing betrayal completely electrified the room.
Daniel looked at the receipt, then looked directly into Victoria's terrified eyes.
"You didn't lose her," Daniel stated clinically, completely devoid of human mercy. "You dumped her in a state facility to rot, lied to my face, and used the massive medical budget I gave you to fund your own luxury lifestyle."
Victoria let out a horrific, high-pitched gasp of pure terror. The massive, multi-million-dollar lie she had built her entire life upon had just spectacularly, catastrophically collapsed in front of the entire high-society crowd.

"I did it for us!" Victoria shrieked wildly, completely abandoning her elegant persona. "She was ruining our lives! She needed too much care! You were going to spend your entire fortune on a woman who couldn't even remember your name!"
👉 Daniel reached into his tuxedo pocket, entirely ready to drop a federal guillotine on his own wedding day.
