Chapter 9 - The Proxy Annulment

"You can't do this!" Chloe shrieked, tears of sheer panic ruining her expensive makeup. "I'll take Julian to court! We are legally married!"
The Marine reached into his dress blue uniform jacket and pulled out a secure satellite phone. He tapped the screen and held it up for Chloe to see.
On the video feed, standing in a command tent thousands of miles away, was Julian. But he wasn't smiling. He looked at Chloe with profound, absolute disgust.
"Julian! Baby, tell them!" Chloe pleaded to the screen.
"I heard everything, Chloe," Julian’s voice echoed through the phone. "The Marine’s body camera was transmitting live the entire night. I watched you treat my mother like trash the second you thought you had my money."
Chloe clamped her hands over her mouth, suffocating on her own horror.
"A military proxy marriage requires the final verbal confirmation from the deployed service member to be legally binding in this state," Julian said coldly. "I am refusing confirmation. The marriage is void. You are nothing to me."
