Chapter 2 - The Unwanted Sister

To understand the sheer, unapologetic cruelty of the bride's toast, one had to look back at the suffocating, toxic dynamic of the family.
For her entire life, Clare had been the golden child. She was the beautiful, social-climbing daughter who spent her parents' money on designer bags, European vacations, and networking at elite country clubs. Katherine, on the other hand, had quietly enlisted in the military straight out of college. She had spent the last twenty-five years deployed in completely classified, highly dangerous global conflict zones.
Because Katherine’s work was heavily classified, she never bragged. She never told her family about the bullets she had dodged, the thousands of troops she had commanded, or the massive global intelligence operations she had spearheaded.
Her family, completely ignorant of anything outside their wealthy bubble, assumed she was a low-level bureaucratic secretary.
When Katherine had arrived at the historic Boston venue three hours earlier, her mother had practically suffered a panic attack in the lobby.
"Katherine! What on earth are you wearing?!" her mother had hissed, violently pulling her into a coat closet away from the arriving guests. "This is a million-dollar black-tie event! Clare is marrying a highly decorated Army Major! You look like a masculine security guard!"
"It's my formal dress uniform, Mother," Katherine had replied calmly, her natural micro-expressions betraying only a flicker of exhausted disappointment.
"It ruins the entire aesthetic of the wedding," her mother had snarled, completely blind to the heavy silver stars pinned to her daughter's shoulders. "Go sit at table forty-two by the kitchen. And please, try not to speak to any of Ethan's military friends. We don't want them knowing Clare's sister is a low-level clerk."

Katherine hadn't argued. She had simply nodded, walked to the absolute back of the room, and sat in the shadows, enduring the silent, toxic judgment of her own flesh and blood.
👉 But the arrogant family was entirely oblivious to the monumental, historical legend currently sitting by their buffet line.
