Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The cinematic realism of Katherine's quiet dignity was breathtaking.
She didn't dramatically throw her napkin down. She didn't scream, and she didn't burst into tears like a cartoon character. She simply placed her hands flat on the white linen tablecloth and calmly, deliberately pushed her wooden chair back.
She stood up to her full height. Her shoulders were perfectly straight, her posture radiating the crushing, undeniable authority of a battlefield commander. She reached down, picked up her small black clutch purse, and prepared to turn her back on the ballroom, intending to walk out the side exit and never speak to her mother or sister again.
But across the massive ballroom, on the brightly lit main stage, the atmosphere had just violently, catastrophically shifted.
Major Ethan Vance was standing next to his laughing bride. He had a polite, strained smile on his face, holding a crystal champagne flute. When Clare had pointed across the room to mock her sister, Ethan had naturally followed her manicured finger.
For the first time all evening, Ethan actually looked into the dark, isolated corner by the kitchen doors.
He squinted through the warm, golden glow of the chandeliers, trying to see the "embarrassing paper pusher" his new bride was laughing at.
His eyes locked onto the dark-blue fabric of the Army dress uniform. Then, his eyes moved up to the heavy, unmistakable rack of high-level combat decorations. Finally, his eyes locked onto the three massive, heavy silver stars pinned directly to her shoulders.
And then, Ethan saw her face.

An extreme close-up captured Ethan’s expression. The polite, handsome smile instantly vanished, violently wiped from his face. All the color rapidly drained from his cheeks. His breathing completely stopped.
👉 Ethan realized his arrogant, snobby bride had just publicly humiliated a living military legend.
