Chapter 7 - The Silent March

Clare noticed the movement beside her. She lowered the microphone, her malicious smile faltering slightly as she looked at her new husband.

"Ethan? Honey, where are you going?" Clare whispered, confused by the sudden, terrifying darkness in his eyes. "We haven't cut the cake yet."

Ethan didn't answer her. He didn't even look at her.

He stepped directly off the main stage, his polished military boots hitting the hardwood floor with a heavy, authoritative thud.

The cinematic realism of the moment gripped the entire ballroom. The low murmur of wealthy chatter and the soft, elegant background music slowly began to die away. The defense-industry executives and military officers in the crowd noticed the Major’s sudden, aggressive movement and turned their heads.

Ethan marched directly across the center of the polished dance floor.

He didn't walk like a groom greeting a guest. He marched with a rigid, absolute military cadence. His shoulders were perfectly square, his eyes locked entirely on the isolated table in the back of the room.

The two hundred wealthy guests completely froze. The sea of elegant gowns and expensive tuxedos naturally parted, giving the towering, furious Major a wide, clear path.

Clare stood frozen on the stage, the crystal microphone hanging uselessly in her hand. Her mother, sitting at the VIP table, physically leaned forward, her heavy diamond necklace catching the light as a deep, uncomfortable wave of anxiety washed over her. Why was the groom walking toward the embarrassment?
