Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The opulent Boston ballroom was now completely, suffocatingly dead silent. The only sound was the sharp, heavy click of Ethan’s polished boots crossing the final stretch of the marble floor.
Ethan stopped exactly three feet in front of Katherine.
The defense contractors and wealthy politicians in the crowd finally craned their necks to see who the Major was approaching. As the golden light from the chandeliers shifted, the heavy silver stars on Katherine’s shoulders suddenly caught the light, gleaming brightly for the entire room to see.
A collective, horrific gasp echoed from the military officers and defense CEOs in the crowd. They instantly recognized her. The absolute, unhinged terror of realizing they had been sitting in the same room as the legendary General Vance without showing her respect sent a shockwave of panic through the elite guests.
Ethan didn't look at the crowd. He looked directly into the eyes of the woman who had saved his life.
He saw the quiet, exhausted dignity in her posture. He saw how her own family had forced her to sit by the kitchen doors like a stray dog. The profound, overwhelming shame that his own wedding was the source of her humiliation burned in his chest like acid.
A tight close-up captured Ethan’s face. His jaw clenched tightly. His breathing was heavy, natural, and deeply emotional.
He didn't offer a handshake. He didn't offer a polite, civilian greeting.
