Chapter 3 - The Trophy Husband

The cinematic realism of the tension built slowly under the golden light of the crystal chandeliers.

On the main stage, Clare smiled a brilliant, completely fake smile, basking in the laughter of her wealthy friends. She turned slightly to lean against her new husband, Major Ethan Vance.

Ethan was a fiercely disciplined, incredibly handsome man in his mid-thirties, wearing his own immaculate U.S. Army formal dress uniform. He was a rising star in the military, a highly respected officer who commanded deep loyalty from his men.

But to Clare, Ethan wasn't a partner; he was a shiny, high-status prop.

Clare had aggressively pursued Ethan because marrying a handsome, decorated military officer elevated her social standing among her elite Boston friends. She loved parading him around the country club, bragging about his rank to anyone who would listen. She was obsessed with the prestige of his uniform, completely oblivious to the actual grueling, life-and-death sacrifices required to earn it.

Throughout the entire evening, Clare had intentionally kept Ethan isolated on the opposite side of the ballroom, introducing him to defense-industry CEOs and wealthy politicians. She had deliberately made sure Ethan never crossed paths with her "embarrassing" older sister.

Ethan had been polite, shaking hands and making small talk, assuming Clare's family was simply a typical, eccentric wealthy dynasty.

He had absolutely no idea that the woman he respected most in the entire world was sitting eighty feet away, being actively treated like a piece of garbage by the woman he had just married.

Clare tightened her grip on Ethan's arm, leaning back into the crystal microphone. She wasn't finished humiliating her sister. She wanted to completely, permanently break Katherine's quiet dignity in front of the entire elite crowd.

👉 Clare raised the microphone back to her lips, preparing to deliver a punchline that would ultimately destroy her own marriage.
