Chapter 4 - The Ignorant Elite

The heavy, suffocating silence of anticipation fell over the opulent ballroom as the guests waited for the bride's next joke.
Katherine sat perfectly still at the tiny table. The dim lighting near the service doors caught the heavy, metallic gleam of the medals resting on her chest.
To her mother and sister, the ribbons were just colorful pieces of fabric. But to anyone with a shred of military knowledge, Katherine’s uniform was an absolute, terrifying testament to unparalleled bravery and tactical genius. Pinned to her chest was the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and a Silver Star earned during a classified, violently hostile extraction in the Middle East.
She was a three-star Lieutenant General. She held one of the highest, most powerful, and most heavily respected ranks in the entire United States Armed Forces. She commanded tens of thousands of soldiers and had the ear of the Secretary of Defense.
But in this room, she was just the unwanted, spinster sister.
"I mean, look at her," Clare laughed through the speakers, her voice echoing cruelly off the marble walls. "Maybe if she took off that stiff, boring suit and put on some makeup, she could finally find a real man to take care of her. But I guess someone has to file the paperwork at the Pentagon, right?"
Another round of snobby, elite laughter echoed from the VIP tables.
Katherine’s mother smiled proudly, taking a delicate sip of her expensive champagne, completely thrilled that her golden daughter was providing such entertaining, witty banter for their high-society guests.
Katherine didn't flinch. Her facial micro-expressions remained entirely locked in a mask of absolute, titanium stoicism. Her slow, calculated eye movement scanned the room. She didn't feel sadness. She didn't feel humiliation. She felt a cold, profound, and permanent detachment.
