Chapter 6 - The Garage Safe

The entire party watched in stunned, breathless silence as Evelyn and Ryan walked into the garage. Marissa followed closely behind, hyperventilating, her hands shaking around her cell phone.
Evelyn walked straight past the parked cars and went directly to a massive, heavy-duty red metal toolbox sitting in the corner.
She didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy crowbar from the workbench and violently smashed the cheap padlock securing the bottom drawer.
"Evelyn, what is going on?!" Ryan demanded, utterly confused by his wife's actions.
Evelyn pulled the heavy metal drawer open.
Inside the drawer was a thick, legal manila folder and a massive stack of cash secured with heavy rubber bands.
Marissa gasped, covering her mouth with her hands. "That... that's fifty thousand dollars!"
Evelyn picked up the manila folder and handed it directly to Marissa. "Read the paperwork, Marissa. I found it when I went in here to get more paper towels for the BBQ."
Marissa opened the folder with trembling fingers. She scanned the bold, black text on the legal documents. Her heart violently flatlined. The blood completely drained from her flawless face.
It wasn't a standard business contract.
It was a fully finalized, signed, and notarized deed transferring the total ownership of Marissa's childhood home—the house they were currently standing in—directly to a shell company owned exclusively by Derek. And attached to it was a highly confidential divorce filing, dated for tomorrow morning.

"He forged your signature, Marissa," Evelyn stated coldly, the sheer, evil magnitude of the betrayal setting into the quiet garage. "He mortgaged this entire house, took the fifty thousand in cash, and was planning to file for divorce tomorrow, leaving you completely bankrupt and homeless."
