Chapter 9 - The Eviction

The police officers dragged the weeping, hysterical man out of the backyard and shoved him into the back of a police cruiser. His desperate, pathetic cries faded down the suburban street, ending his reign of psychological cruelty, bullying, and greed forever.
He was going to a maximum-security prison completely broke.
The sunny backyard fell into a profound, heavy, and incredibly peaceful silence.
The party guests, entirely disgusted by Derek's monstrous actions, quietly gathered their things and began to filter out of the house, offering Marissa quiet words of support.
Evelyn stood on the patio deck, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy, agonizing adrenaline finally faded. She turned around and walked over to Marissa.
Marissa was crying, but they weren't tears of fear anymore. They were tears of pure, unadulterated relief. The terrifying nightmare was completely finished. She had almost lost everything to a monster.
"Thank you, Evelyn," Marissa wept softly, pulling her sister-in-law into a fierce, desperate embrace. "I thought you were just letting him bully you all these years. I didn't know you were just being patient."
"I don't fight unless I have to," Evelyn smiled warmly, hugging her back. "And today, I had to."
Ryan walked over, wrapping his arms around both of the women, profound gratitude filling his eyes. He looked at his soaking-wet wife with absolute, unbreakable respect.
"Remind me never to make you angry," Ryan joked softly, wiping a tear from his own eye.
