Chapter 8 - The Sirens

The wailing sound of heavy police sirens shattered the quiet, sunny suburban afternoon.

Three police cruisers violently swerved into the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing brilliantly against the open garage doors.

Derek’s eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. The arrogant, untouchable bully completely shattered, leaving a feral, desperate coward in its place. He looked at the fifty thousand dollars in cash, and then looked at the approaching officers.

He bolted.

Derek sprinted toward the side gate of the backyard, desperately trying to escape into the neighborhood.

But he never made it.

Evelyn moved with explosive speed. She cut across the lawn, intercepting him perfectly before he could even reach the fence. She didn't use a flashy judo throw this time. She simply executed a flawless, brutal leg sweep.

Derek crashed hard into the grass, groaning in absolute agony.

Before he could get up, two massive, heavily armed police officers rushed the yard, violently grabbing Derek by his gray shirt and hauling him up from the dirt.

"Derek Vance," the lead officer barked, perfectly informed by Evelyn's prior call. "You are under arrest for felony fraud, grand larceny, and domestic assault."

"No! Please!" Derek wailed pathetically, kicking and thrashing wildly as the cold steel handcuffs clicked loudly around his wrists. "I was just protecting my assets! She was going to take my money!"

"It was never your money," Marissa stated coldly, walking up behind the officers, holding the forged folder tightly against her green top.

"Marissa! Have mercy!" Derek sobbed, completely humiliated as forty party guests watched him get dragged away.

"You showed me no mercy," Marissa replied, turning her back on him entirely.
