Chapter 2 - The Children's Pancake Plate

To understand why a powerful billionaire was standing in a freezing diner parking lot, you had to go back exactly twenty minutes.
Arthur Vance, the legendary founder of Vance Commercial Construction, had been sitting alone in a booth inside the diner. Since his wife passed away three years ago, Arthur hated being inside his massive, silent mansion on Christmas Eve. He had driven out to Lancaster just to escape the ghosts of his empty home.
That was when he saw Sarah and Lily.
Arthur had watched the exhausted young mother empty her pockets onto the diner table. She meticulously counted quarters and dimes, her hands shaking from the cold.
When the waitress arrived, Sarah didn't order a warm holiday dinner.
"Just the children's pancake plate, please," Sarah had whispered, hiding her quiet desperation. "And a glass of tap water."
When the food arrived, Sarah pushed the entire plate toward her daughter. Lily had looked up, her big blue eyes filled with worry. "What about you, Mommy?"
"I already ate earlier, honey," Sarah smiled, brushing a strand of hair from the girl's face. "I'm not hungry."
