Chapter 6 - The Hidden Flash Drive

"Richard didn't just steal my savings, Mr. Vance," Sarah whispered, tears of profound relief and exhaustion spilling down her cheeks. "My father was an environmental engineer. Before he died, he discovered that Richard’s development company was illegally dumping toxic chemicals to cut costs on massive commercial builds."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed with sharp, dangerous intensity.

"My father hid the evidence," Sarah continued. "The land Richard wants from me is the exact location of the illegal dumping site. If Richard owns the land, he can pave over the evidence permanently. If he doesn't get it, he's going to federal prison."

"Do you have the proof?" Arthur asked, leaning forward.

Sarah nodded. She called Lily over. "Lily, sweetheart, can I see Mr. Barnaby?"

Lily handed her mother a worn, stuffed brown teddy bear. Sarah reached into a hidden seam in the bear's back and pulled out a small, encrypted black flash drive.

"It's all in here," Sarah said. "Bank records. Bribes. Environmental reports. And the name of the massive construction firm Richard is currently trying to partner with to legitimize his stolen money."

Arthur took the flash drive. He walked over to his mahogany desk, plugged it into his laptop, and opened the files.

The cinematic realism of his absolute, suffocating shock paralyzed the room.
