Chapter 3 - The Broken Home

Arthur had walked out of the diner just in time to see Sarah and Lily climb into the backseat of a battered sedan.
He stopped in his tracks, horrified. The backseat was piled high with garbage bags full of clothes, cheap blankets, and a few small toys. This wasn't just a poor family going home after dinner. The freezing, broken-down car was their home.
Before Arthur could even approach the vehicle to offer his help, a sleek, jet-black Porsche SUV tore into the parking lot, blocking Sarah's car from leaving.
Richard stepped out into the snow.
Arthur watched from the shadows as the arrogant developer pounded on the glass, threatening to call the authorities and tear the mother and daughter apart on Christmas Eve.
"Sign the papers, Sarah!" Richard sneered, pulling a legal document from his cashmere coat. "You have zero dollars. You have no lawyer. You can't even afford to keep the heat on for your own kid! You're a pathetic failure as a mother. Give me the land, and I'll let you walk to a homeless shelter."
Sarah cracked the car window just an inch, tears streaming down her freezing cheeks.
"It's my father's land, Richard," she wept, her voice trembling. "It's all Lily has left. You already stole my savings. You stole the house. Please, just leave us alone."

Richard laughed, a cold, demonic sound that made Arthur’s blood boil.
👉 Richard reached into his coat for his cell phone to call CPS, entirely blind to the apex predator stepping out of the dark.
