Chapter 2 - The Missing Words

The cinematic tension in the rainy office was absolutely suffocating.

Daniel didn't yell at the cleaner. He didn't call security to drag them out. His highly tactical, brilliant mind instantly processed the massive, terrifying legal implication of the missing word the little girl had just pointed out.

He looked down at the heavy blue folder.

Annie kept her small finger firmly planted on paragraph 17, sub-section B.

It was the liability clause. For the last six months, Daniel’s legal team had negotiated fiercely to ensure that in the event of a market collapse, the financial liability would be split evenly between his company and the merging partners.

Daniel traced the lines of the contract with his eyes.

The word "jointly" was completely gone.

The sentence had been subtly, expertly altered. If Daniel signed this exact document tomorrow morning, he would be legally assuming 100% of the financial liability for the entire multi-billion-dollar corporate merger. If the new venture failed, his partners would walk away completely clean, and Daniel would be entirely, irreversibly bankrupt.

An extreme close-up captured Daniel staring at the paper. His dark eyes narrowed in pure, unadulterated shock as he realized a six-year-old girl in a pink backpack had just saved his entire empire from complete sabotage.

Daniel slowly lifted his head. He looked at the little girl, a powerful, emotional pause filling the quiet room.

"Show me," Daniel whispered in absolute disbelief. "Show me exactly how you knew it was different yesterday."

Laura gasped, rushing forward to grab her daughter’s hand. "Mr. Carter, please! She's just a kid! She doesn't understand what she's saying! Don't fire me, I need this job!"

"I'm not firing you," Daniel stated smoothly, his voice dropping into a low, lethal tone that wasn't directed at her. "But I need to know exactly who was in my office."
