Chapter 9 - The Rightful Reward

Laura and Annie were sitting quietly in the breakroom. Laura looked absolutely terrified, holding her daughter tightly, assuming they were about to be fired and thrown out into the rain.

Daniel ignored his expensive suit. He completely bypassed the arrogance of his wealth and dropped to both knees right in front of the little girl in the yellow raincoat.

"Annie," Daniel said softly, his voice thick with genuine, overwhelming emotion. "You are the smartest, bravest little girl I have ever met. You saved my entire company today."

Annie blinked innocently, a bright, beautiful smile returning to her face. "Does that mean my mom gets to keep her job?"

"No," Daniel smiled warmly, genuine tears welling in his dark eyes.

Laura gasped, her heart dropping into her stomach.

Daniel looked up at the hardworking single mother. The terrifying, ruthless CEO completely melted away, leaving only a profoundly grateful, fiercely protective man.

"Your mom is not a cleaner anymore," Daniel declared smoothly, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "I am promoting her to Head of Corporate Archives. I am quadrupling her salary. She gets her own office on this floor, with full benefits."

Laura covered her mouth with her hands, breaking down into heavy, beautiful sobs of pure, unadulterated relief. The crushing, terrifying weight of poverty was entirely erased in a single sentence.

"Thank you," Laura wept, hugging Annie tightly against her chest. "Thank you so much, Mr. Carter."

"We aren't finished," Daniel smiled softly.
