Chapter 5 - The Morning Panic

The next morning, the heavy rain had stopped, but the tension on the 31st floor was violently suffocating.
At exactly 7:30 AM, Marcus and Evelyn walked into the executive suite. Marcus wore a sharp, expensive grey suit, and Evelyn wore a pristine white designer dress. They looked arrogant, wealthy, and entirely confident that they were about to steal a billion-dollar empire.
"Is he here yet?" Evelyn whispered, checking her diamond watch.
"No, his car is stuck in traffic," Marcus replied smoothly, walking directly over to Daniel’s dark mahogany desk. "Let's just make sure the blue folder is ready for the board."
Marcus confidently flipped the blue folder open.
A tight, cinematic close-up captured Marcus’s face. The arrogant, untouchable executive completely froze. The color violently drained from his face, leaving him looking like he had just seen a ghost.
Resting inside the folder wasn't the clean, sabotaged contract. It was the shredded, taped-together original draft with the word "jointly" highlighted in bright yellow marker by a six-year-old child.
"What the hell is this?!" Marcus hissed, his hands shaking as he picked up the taped paper.
Evelyn gasped, stepping backward in sheer terror. "He knows! Daniel knows we changed it!"
"He can't know!" Marcus panicked, his high-society mask shattering into a feral, desperate cowardice. "If he knew, he would have called the police! Maybe the cleaning staff found it in the trash and left it on his desk by mistake!"
"We have to fix it!" Evelyn shrieked quietly, rushing toward the private executive printer in the corner of the office. "The board meeting is in twenty minutes! If we don't have a clean copy of the sabotaged contract for him to sign, our partners will kill us!"
Marcus frantically pulled a USB drive from his pocket, plugging it into the printer to generate a fresh copy of the fraudulent document.
"Hurry!" Marcus sweated profusely.
