Chapter 4 - The Betrayer's Web

During the tense, silent drive across the city, the horrific pieces of the puzzle began violently snapping together in Dominic’s mind.

Four years ago, after the explosion, Dominic had woken up in total darkness. He had lost his vision, his wife, and his unborn child. Isabella, the grieving sister, had immediately swooped in. She acted as his eyes. She nursed him back to health. She slowly took over the financial logistics of his massive syndicate, isolating him from his most trusted advisors under the guise of "protecting his health."

He had proposed to her last month purely out of obligation, believing she was the only loyal person left in his life.

But if Elena was alive... if she had been hiding for four years with a four-year-old child... Isabella had orchestrated the entire nightmare.

The armored SUV came to a halt in a rundown, forgotten industrial neighborhood on the south side of the city.

Marcus opened the door, gently guiding Dominic out while holding little Lily's hand.

"It's the brick building on the corner, Boss," Marcus whispered. "Third floor."

Dominic didn't wait for his cane. He moved with the fierce, terrifying urgency of a man who had just crawled out of his own grave. They climbed the rotting wooden stairs. Lily ran ahead and pushed open a heavy, unlatched metal door.

"Mama! I brought him!" Lily announced.

Inside the dim apartment, a woman dropped a ceramic plate. It shattered against the floor.

Dominic froze in the doorway. He couldn't see her, but he heard the exact, unmistakable rhythm of her breathing. He smelled the faint, beautiful scent of lavender and rain.
