Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the Past

"Dominic," Elena sobbed, her voice incredibly weak and terrified.

Dominic fell to his knees on the cheap linoleum floor, holding his arms out. Elena rushed forward, collapsing into his chest. He buried his face in her hair, feeling the heavy, undeniable reality of his wife alive in his arms. He traced her face with his tattooed hands, feeling a thick, raised burn scar across her left cheek from the explosion.

"I thought you were dead," Dominic wept, the ruthless mafia boss completely breaking down. "I buried an empty casket. Why didn't you come home to me?"

Elena clung to his black suit, her entire body trembling violently.

"I tried," Elena gasped. "I dragged myself out of the burning car before the second explosion. I was pregnant. I went to the hospital, but Isabella found me there before your men did."

Dominic’s jaw locked. The temperature in the room plummeted.

"Isabella paid the corrupt doctors to declare me dead," Elena cried, pulling back to look at his dark sunglasses. "She came into my recovery room and told me she planted the bomb. She said if I ever contacted you, if I ever stepped foot near the estate, she would slaughter our baby the second it was born."

The cinematic realism of Dominic’s absolute, apocalyptic rage was suffocating.

Isabella hadn't just stolen his empire. She had kept his wife trapped in poverty and terror for four years, raising his rightful heir in the shadows, while playing the devoted fiancée in his luxurious mansion.
