Chapter 1 - The Forbidden Study

The luxurious private study of the grand American mansion was strictly off-limits to everyone. Inside, Gabriel sat in a heavy leather armchair, shrouded in the warm, flickering glow of antique lamps. He was a man in his thirties, possessing a terrifying, lethal aura. Dark hair, a sharp jawline covered in light stubble, and intricate, dark tattoos creeping up his neck and muscular arms beneath his black shirt. As the ruthless head of the city's most feared syndicate, he was a man who lived in the shadows.
Outside the massive windows, a heavy Christmas Eve snowstorm raged, but inside, the silence was absolute.
Until a tiny voice shattered it.
“I have a Christmas gift for you, mister.”
Gabriel stopped moving entirely. His hand hovered over a glass of bourbon. He turned his head slowly, his realistic facial micro-expressions shifting from dangerous irritation to absolute, paralyzing confusion.
Standing in the center of the priceless Persian rug was a four-year-old girl. She had wavy blonde hair and was wearing a cheap, slightly worn pink and white Santa dress with fuzzy boots. In her tiny hands, she held a small, poorly wrapped gold box.
“Please don’t be sad anymore,” the little girl whispered, her big blue eyes staring directly at the most dangerous man in the city.
Gabriel stared at her, his posture guarded, his muscles tense. His heavily guarded estate was supposed to be impenetrable.
“Who let you in?” Gabriel asked, his voice a low, rumbling whisper.
The little girl blinked innocently, completely unafraid of his intimidating tattoos or his dark clothing.
“Nobody,” she answered simply.

Gabriel let out a slow, restrained breath. The cold, hardened exterior of the mafia boss began to crack. He slowly touched his chin in sheer disbelief, his sharp gaze softening as she stepped forward and handed him the tiny gold gift.
