Chapter 4 - The Freezing Snow

Downstairs, in the grand marble foyer of the mansion, the heavy oak front doors were wide open, letting the freezing, violent blizzard blow directly into the house.

Clara, a woman in her late twenties wearing a thin, black-and-white maid's uniform, was on her hands and knees on the snow-covered front steps. She was shivering uncontrollably, tears streaming down her pale, terrified face.

Standing safely inside the warm foyer was Victoria. She wore a stunning, blood-red designer evening gown, holding a crystal glass of champagne. Her flawless, heavily contoured face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Please, Miss Victoria!" Clara sobbed, her teeth chattering as the freezing wind whipped her hair. "I just need my paycheck! It's Christmas Eve! My daughter needs her asthma medicine! You can't fire me without my wages!"

"I can do whatever I want, you pathetic rat," Victoria sneered, taking a slow sip of her champagne. "You spilled coffee on my imported silk rug. That rug costs more than your miserable life."

"It was an accident!" Clara begged, desperately trying to crawl back into the warmth of the foyer.

Victoria didn't hesitate. She stepped forward in her sharp designer heels and violently kicked Clara backward in the chest, sending the frail maid tumbling down the icy stone steps into the deep snow.

"You are fired, and you are getting absolutely nothing!" Victoria shrieked arrogantly, completely unaware of her impending doom. "If you don't get off my property in five seconds, I will have the guards release the dogs! Now crawl away and take your filthy brat with you!"

Clara wept in the snow, her heart shattering. She had no money, no coat, and no way to protect her little girl.

"Close the doors," Victoria ordered her loyal bodyguard, turning her back on the freezing mother.
