Chapter 7 - The Exploded Lie

"Explain?" Gabriel mocked, taking a slow, predatory step forward. "Explain how the watch of my murdered brother ended up locked in a secret box under your floorboards?"
Victoria frantically looked around the foyer, realizing she was completely, inescapably cornered. Her elegant, high-society mask shattered into a million pieces, leaving only a desperate, feral coward in its place.
"I bought it!" Victoria shrieked, desperately fabricating a lie. "I bought it from a pawn shop, Gabriel! I was going to give it to you for Christmas! It was a surprise! I swear to God, I didn't know who had it before me!"
Gabriel didn't scream. The cinematic realism of his restraint was infinitely more terrifying than any shout.
"You bought it?" Gabriel repeated softly. He turned his head and looked at the four-year-old girl standing in the doorway with her mother. "Lily. Come here."
Lily, still wrapped in her mother's arms, looked up. Clara was terrified, but she trusted the man who had just put a coat on her back. She let Lily walk forward.
"Tell the nice lady what else you saw in the secret box, Lily," Gabriel asked gently, his eyes never leaving Victoria's pale face.
Lily blinked innocently and pointed her tiny finger directly at Victoria.
"There was a heavy black gun," Lily said clearly, her sweet voice echoing in the silent foyer. "And a lot of papers with Mr. Julian's name on them. And a picture of a broken car."
The entire room went dead silent.
Victoria's bodyguard, standing near the door, slowly took his hand off his weapon. Even he wouldn't protect a woman who had assassinated the boss's brother.
