Chapter 3 - The Cold Question

Luca was the undisputed, untouchable boss of the Chicago criminal underworld. He was a fiercely handsome thirty-six-year-old man wearing a sharp black suit with a black tie and a crisp white shirt. Dark, highly intimidating tattoos crept up his neck and across his knuckles.
A medium cinematic shot captured the exact, breathless composition.
Luca stood directly behind his mother’s chair. He slowly lowered his crystal whiskey glass onto the white tablecloth. His dark eyes were burning with a lethal, demonic anger. Hannah stood protectively with her hand on Teresa’s frail shoulder. Vanessa immediately stepped backward, gesturing defensively, realizing she had just been caught screaming at the boss's mother.
"Luca, darling!" Vanessa stammered nervously, trying to put on a sickening, fake smile. "I was just telling the maid to fetch a nicer shawl for your mother! This old rag is embarrassing! In fact, I think I'm going to fire her for insubordination!"
Luca didn't look at his fiancée.
He looked at the worn, pale-blue blanket his mother was clutching for dear life.
"Why would Hannah be getting fired?" Luca asked quietly. His voice didn't echo; it dropped into a terrifying, icy, lethal register that promised imminent destruction.
Vanessa swallowed hard, the color slowly draining from her perfectly contoured face. "Because she's disrespecting my orders!"
