Chapter 10 - The True Family

Damiano looked at the tangled bomb wires resting on the floor, then slowly looked up into Sophia’s exhausted, terrified brown eyes.

"You raised an incredible daughter, Sophia," Damiano whispered, his voice thick with profound, unfiltered gratitude.

Sophia swallowed hard, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I just want to keep her safe, Mr. Moretti. That's all I've ever wanted."

Damiano reached out with his large, tattooed hand. He didn't touch the maid as a boss giving an order; he gently rested his hand on Emma’s small shoulder. The little girl looked up at him, her brown eyes completely devoid of fear now that the shiny lady was gone.

"You saved my life today, Emma," Damiano said softly, his dark eyes filled with absolute sincerity. "From this moment on, you and your mother are under my personal protection. You will never scrub another floor in this house, Sophia. Whatever you need, whatever you want, it is yours. Forever."

Emma smiled, hugging her brown stuffed bear tightly against her pink dress. Sophia let out a shuddering breath of pure relief, knowing her daughter would never have to live in fear again. The ivory-clad traitor was gone, the empire was secure, and Damiano had found a new, unbreakable loyalty in the most unexpected place.

If you were Damiano, would you have handed your treacherous fiancée over to the police, or handled her betrayal privately within the syndicate?
