Chapter 2 - The Pointing Finger

The crystal-clear sound of Emma’s panicked voice brought the entire corridor to a dead halt. The elite bodyguards in the background stiffened, their hands instinctively dropping toward the concealed weapons inside their jackets.

Sophia dropped the dusting cloth she was holding. Her heart slammed violently against her ribs. She immediately dropped to her knees on the cold, polished marble floor, grabbing her daughter by the shoulders.

"What's wrong, sweetie?" Sophia asked, her voice trembling with an overwhelming, protective panic.

Emma was completely breathless, tears welling up in her wide brown eyes. She squeezed her brown stuffed bear so tightly her knuckles turned white. Instead of answering her mother, the little girl raised her tiny, trembling hand and pointed her little finger directly down the long, sweeping expanse of the grand marble hallway.

Damiano stopped completely. His hand hovered just inches from the brass handle of his office door.

The calm, untouchable authority of the mafia boss instantly evaporated. His sharp, dark eyes darted away from his office and followed the exact trajectory of the little girl's pointed finger. The temperature in the corridor seemed to plummet to freezing as his survival instincts flared to life.
