Chapter 5 - The Mother's Shield

Sophia’s eyes locked onto the pulsing red light of the small black remote in Victoria’s hand.

Growing up in a rough neighborhood before taking the housekeeping job, Sophia instantly recognized the grim reality of the device. The blood completely drained from her face.

"She has the detonator!" Sophia screamed, her voice frantic, completely shattering the quiet elegance of the mansion.

Without a single second of hesitation, Sophia threw her entire body forward. She tackled Emma to the polished marble floor, wrapping her arms and her black and white maid uniform completely around the six-year-old girl in a desperate, fiercely protective embrace. She curled her spine, fully intending to use her own body to absorb the impending shockwave and shrapnel to keep her daughter alive.

Emma whimpered, burying her face into her mother's chest, her tiny hands still death-gripping her brown stuffed bear.

Victoria let out a sharp, cruel laugh. The sheer arrogance of the blonde woman swelled as she looked at the pathetic maid cowering on the floor. She thought she held the absolute power of life and death over the most dangerous man in New York.
