Chapter 7 - The Fiancée's Confession

Victoria pressed the button with a manic, unhinged scream, bracing herself for the deafening roar of fire and shattering glass.
Click.
The tiny, pathetic plastic click of the remote control button echoed down the hallway.
Nothing happened. No fire. No shockwave. Just the heavy, suffocating silence of the glowing crystal chandeliers.
Victoria froze. She frantically mashed her thumb against the button again and again. Click. Click. Click. The red light on the remote flashed, but the explosive device inside the office remained entirely dormant.
"No! Why isn't it working?!" Victoria panicked, staring at the black plastic in her hands with pure, unadulterated horror.
"Because she saw you," a tiny, shaky voice echoed from the floor.
Damiano slowly looked down over his broad shoulder. Emma was peeking out from beneath Sophia’s protective arms. The six-year-old girl wasn't crying anymore. She looked at the shiny lady with the innocent, brutal honesty of a child.
"I was hiding under the big desk," Emma explained softly, clutching her brown stuffed bear. "I saw the shiny lady put the ticking box by the chair. Mommy told me ticking boxes are bad and dangerous."

Damiano’s dark eyes widened. He looked at the little girl, his heart hammering against his ribs.
