Chapter 1 - The Chopped Hair

The modern American living room was bathed in bright, natural daylight. The beautiful space featured dark hardwood floors, a stone fireplace, and expensive, neutral-toned furniture.
But the peaceful afternoon had just been violently shattered into sheer, unadulterated heartbreak.
Chloe, a sweet nine-year-old girl wearing a purple dress and a white cardigan, was standing in the exact center of the room. She was sobbing hysterically, her small body trembling with pure devastation.
Chloe was known for her beautiful, long brown hair that used to flow all the way down her back. But right now, her hair was completely gone. It had been brutally, unevenly chopped off right at her ears, leaving jagged, horrific patches across her scalp. She desperately tried to hide the ruined, humiliating mess by pulling a bucket hat tightly down over her head.
Standing aggressively right in front of the weeping child was Beverly.
Beverly was Chloe’s grandmother—a bitter, highly controlling woman in her sixties wearing a blue cardigan and dark pants. She held a large pair of kitchen shears in her hand, pointing her finger aggressively at the sobbing nine-year-old.
Suddenly, the front door burst open.
Audrey, a woman in her thirties wearing a floral shirt and dark jeans, rushed into the living room. She dropped her purse onto the hardwood floor, absolutely horrified by the sight of her weeping daughter.
