Chapter 7 - The Arrest

"No! Please!" Beverly shrieked like a feral coward, thrashing and kicking wildly as the massive agents grabbed her arms, violently hauling her up from the hardwood floor. The cold steel handcuffs clicked loudly around her wrists, snapping the arrogant, cruel grandmother back into the horrific reality of her crimes.

Audrey completely turned her back on her mother-in-law.

The agents dragged the weeping, panicking woman entirely out of the house. Her desperate, pathetic cries faded into the distance, ending her reign of psychological cruelty, greed, and abuse forever. She was going to face twenty years in a federal penitentiary, completely broke and entirely alone.

The living room fell into a profound, heavy, and incredibly peaceful silence.

Audrey knelt back down on the floor. She gently pulled the bucket hat off Chloe's head. The haircut was awful, but Audrey didn't look at the uneven chops. She looked deeply into her daughter's eyes with profound, unshakeable love.

"It's going to be okay, sweetie," Audrey promised quietly, kissing her daughter's forehead. "She can never hurt you again."

Chloe sniffled, wrapping her arms tightly around her mother's neck. The massive, suffocating weight of terror completely lifted from the little girl's shoulders.
