Chapter 2 - The Cruel Justification

The cinematic tension in the bright living room was completely suffocating.

Audrey gently grabbed her daughter's shoulders. Chloe immediately buried her face in her mother's floral shirt, crying so hard she could barely catch her breath.

"Grandma cut off my hair!" Chloe choked out, her voice a panicked, devastated whisper. "She said I was being bad!"

Audrey stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice.

She had just left Chloe with Beverly for two hours to run a quick errand. Audrey slowly looked up at her mother-in-law. She expected Beverly to be holding a tangled brush, maybe trying to explain away a tragic accident with a piece of gum.

But Beverly wasn't apologizing. She stood tall in her blue cardigan, gripping the kitchen shears, her face set in an expression of pure, toxic arrogance.

"She needs to learn humility, Audrey," Beverly stated sternly, completely devoid of any human empathy for the traumatized child. "She spent twenty minutes playing with her hair in the mirror this morning. Vanity is a disgusting trait. I am simply teaching my granddaughter that inner beauty is more important than looking like a spoiled pageant queen."

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Audrey’s face.
