Chapter 5 - The Stolen Millions

An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Beverly’s face. She stopped breathing. The air in her lungs violently turned to absolute ice.

"For the last five years," Audrey whispered lethally, "you haven't donated a single dime to the children's hospital. You have been aggressively, methodically embezzling millions of dollars from the charity trust, funneling it through three different shell companies directly into your private retirement accounts."

Beverly stumbled backward, the heavy kitchen shears slipping from her trembling hands and clattering uselessly against the hardwood floor.

Her entire, highly calculated, high-society life had just been completely annihilated by the woman she thought she could bully.

"You... you hacked my private accounts?" Beverly choked out, her voice dropping into a panicked, terrified whisper. "That's illegal!"

"I didn't hack anything," Audrey replied coldly. "I'm a licensed federal auditor. I was hired by the charity board three weeks ago to investigate anonymous reports of missing funds. I finished the audit this morning. I came home early to tell my husband that his mother is a massive, federal fraud."

Beverly hyperventilated, her blue cardigan suddenly feeling suffocatingly tight. She realized she was standing on the edge of a massive federal prison sentence.

"Audrey, please!" Beverly begged pathetically, completely dropping her toxic, arrogant facade.
