Chapter 2 - The Crimson Scarf

The cinematic realism of the freezing winter night felt incredibly heavy as Beatrice knelt beside the stranger.

With trembling, freezing fingers, she pulled a wrapped turkey sandwich and a steaming paper cup of coffee from her bag. She gently placed her very last meal into Gabriel’s dirty, snow-covered gloves. But she didn't stop there. Beatrice slowly unwrapped the thick, crimson-red knitted scarf from her own neck. It was her most precious possession, handmade by her late father, but she carefully wrapped it securely around Gabriel’s broad, shivering shoulders.

Gabriel froze. His deep-set, piercing gray eyes locked onto hers, absolutely stunned by the pure, unadulterated kindness radiating from her soft brown eyes.

"Why would you give me everything?" Gabriel whispered, his voice weak but laced with a heavy, unreadable emotion.

"Because you need it more than I do," Beatrice smiled softly, her voice filled with a gentle, quiet dignity.

She gently squeezed his frozen hand, stood up, and disappeared into the relentless, blinding snow.

Gabriel watched her walk away until she was completely swallowed by the winter storm. The moment she was gone, the exhausted, helpless homeless persona violently shattered. His expression hardened into a mask of intense, terrifying, and absolute authority. He was not a beggar. He was a forty-one-year-old mafia king testing the loyalty of the city's elite.
