Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing betrayal gripped the center of the ballroom.

A tight close-up focused entirely on River’s face. The hot, burning embarrassment instantly vanished, violently replaced by a chilling, absolute, and profoundly heartbreaking realization. Her own father, the man who was supposed to protect her, was actively willing to sacrifice her dignity, her pride, and her physical safety just to secure a business check.

"You want me to thank them?" River whispered, her voice completely quiet, shaking with a devastated, earth-shattering realization.

"I want you to stop making a scene," Dennis snapped quietly, stepping slightly away from her, completely abandoning her to the cruel laughter of the high-society crowd.

Delaney let out a loud, mocking laugh, tossing the torn piece of blue silk directly onto the marble floor. The wealthy guests standing around them chuckled, pointing their glowing smartphone cameras at the ruined, crying woman.

But the cruel laughter suddenly, violently died out.

A wide shot captured a massive, terrifying shift in the atmosphere.

Standing in the grand archway of the ballroom, completely hidden in the shadows until this exact moment, was Nolan.

He was thirty-six, devastatingly handsome, and heavily muscular, wearing a flawlessly tailored dark navy suit with a dark tie. He wasn't just a wealthy guest. Nolan was the most feared, ruthless billionaire investor on the entire East Coast. He owned half the real estate in Charleston, and absolutely no one crossed him.

He stepped forward from the doorway. His presence was massive, dominating, and terrifyingly intimidating.

"Don't anyone move."
