Chapter 5 - The Waitress's Defiance

"I couldn't just watch him do it," Lucy sobbed, wiping her red eyes.
Lucy had been carrying a heavy silver tray of champagne flutes across the dining room. When she saw the Manager roughly shoving the terrified, elegant woman in the dark blue dress, Lucy didn't hesitate.
She dropped the tray. The expensive crystal shattered violently across the hardwood floor.
Lucy sprinted across the room and physically threw her body between the Manager and Eleanor. She pushed the Manager back, shielding the trembling matriarch with her own arms.
"What is wrong with you?!" Lucy had screamed at her boss. "She's terrified! Leave her alone!"
"You're fired, Lucy!" the Manager roared, his face turning purple with rage. "Get out of my restaurant right now!"
Lucy didn't care about the job. She gently guided the hyperventilating Eleanor to the plush gold chair near the window. She dropped to her knees, held Eleanor's shaking hands, and asked if there was a single phone number she had memorized.
Eleanor, crying bitterly, recited Julian’s private emergency line.
Lucy pulled her cheap, cracked cell phone from her apron and dialed the number, entirely unaware that she was summoning the most feared, powerful apex predator in the entire city.

Julian listened to the entire story. The cinematic realism of his absolute, unbreakable silence was a thousand times more terrifying than a violent outburst.
👉 Julian slowly turned his head to look at the Manager, and the executioner officially awakened.
