Chapter 7 - The Desperate Lies

Chloe physically staggered backward, her heart hammering against her ribs with sheer, unadulterated terror.
She had specifically chosen tonight because Julian was supposed to be in a board meeting in another state. She had absolutely no idea he had flown back early on his private jet to surprise them.
Driven by pure, animalistic desperation, Chloe plastered a fake, relieved smile across her face and sprinted toward Julian.
"Julian! Oh my god, thank goodness you're here!" Chloe cried out, entirely abandoning her cruel persona. She tried to grab his arm, but one of the massive bodyguards instantly blocked her path.
"Stay back," the bodyguard growled.
"Julian, it's me!" Chloe panicked, pointing frantically at Eleanor. "Your mother is losing her mind! We were supposed to have dinner, and she just wandered off into the lobby! I've been looking everywhere for her! This manager was just trying to help keep her safe!"
Eleanor shrank back into the gold chair, terrified of the wicked woman's lies.
Julian didn't even blink. He looked at his mother, knowing she was as sharp as a tack. Then he looked at the manipulative, venomous snake he had almost married.
"She wandered off?" Julian asked coldly.
