Chapter 3 - The Mother's Day Lie

The heavy, suffocating silence at the hostess stand was a stark contrast to the joyful Mother’s Day celebrations happening behind them.

To understand the absolute, volcanic betrayal burning inside Margaret’s chest, one had to know the heartbreaking phone call she had received just six hours earlier.

That morning, Adam had called her with a deeply apologetic, rushed tone. He claimed that a massive corporate emergency had forced him and Vanessa to fly to New York for the weekend. He told his mother how heartbroken he was that he couldn't take her out for Mother's Day. He promised to make it up to her next month, leaving the elderly widow to make a solo reservation at her favorite restaurant.

It was all a calculated, malicious lie.

Adam hadn't gone to New York. He and Vanessa had stayed in Boston, organizing a staggeringly expensive, lavish reception at Bellavita to celebrate Vanessa’s mother and her entire extended family.

They had assumed Margaret would stay home alone in her quiet estate. They had assumed they could forge her name, drain her private Founder’s Reserve account to pay for a fifteen-course feast and vintage champagne, and no one would ever be the wiser.

Margaret stared at her son’s polished suit. The boy she had raised, the son her late husband had poured his entire fortune into, was looking at her not with love, but with sheer, unadulterated annoyance.
