Chapter 9 - The Final Boundary

The sheer, cinematic humiliation of the moment was devastating.
Adam dropped his polished, arrogant facade completely. He looked at the red Declined screen on the register, then looked at Vanessa’s furious, mortified parents watching from the lobby. His entire life was unraveling in a matter of seconds.
He stumbled forward, dropping to his knees on the immaculate marble floor right in front of Margaret.
"Mom, please!" Adam sobbed, grabbing the hem of her tailored navy suit. "I'm so sorry! I made a mistake! If you don't pay this bill, Vanessa's family will disown me! They'll know I'm bankrupt! Please, just this once, pay the tab! I'm your son!"
Margaret looked down at the pathetic, weeping man kneeling at her feet. She didn't feel anger anymore. She felt a profound, heavy, and final sense of closure.
"You aren't crying because you hurt me, Adam," Margaret said softly, her voice completely steady and devoid of tears. "You're crying because you got caught stealing from me."
Vanessa rushed forward, her face pale with terror. "Margaret, please! We're family! You can't humiliate us like this!"
Margaret slowly turned her head, fixing the cruel daughter-in-law with an icy, uncompromising stare.
"You told me to go home because I was a confused old woman," Margaret reminded her, her tone absolute and lethal. "But I am perfectly clear-headed right now. The Whitmore Hospitality Group no longer recognizes you. And neither do I."
