Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

The lobby of Bellavita plunged into an agonizing, suffocating silence.
Vanessa’s parents and her massive extended family, who had been waiting near the coat check, stopped talking. They stared in absolute shock as the elegant old woman they had been mocking behind her back was suddenly revealed as the apex predator of the entire hospitality group.
Adam staggered backward as if he had been physically struck. "Mom... you... you own Bellavita?"
"I own thirty-two restaurants on the East Coast, Adam," Margaret replied smoothly, completely stripping away the facade of the helpless, confused widow. "Your father built the empire, but I managed the books. I kept it quiet because I wanted to see if my son would ever visit me out of love, rather than out of greed."
She held up the cream-colored authorization document with the forged signature.
"And tonight, I received my answer," Margaret stated, her eyes locking onto his. "You lied about being in New York. You abandoned me on Mother’s Day. And you brought your wife's entire family here to feast on my dime, using a forged signature that constitutes felony fraud."
Vanessa began to hyperventilate. The luxurious, arrogant socialite suddenly realized she was standing in the middle of a burning bridge that she had just doused in gasoline.
"Adam, do something!" Vanessa hissed frantically, grabbing her husband’s arm. "My parents are watching! We sent out formal invitations! We can't lose the terrace room!"
