Chapter 2 - The Fallen Hero

To completely understand why a tiny, eight-year-old girl was clutching a tarnished silver necklace like a sacred relic, one had to look back exactly two years to the darkest, most horrific tragedy of her young life.
Lily’s biological father, Marcus, was not a wealthy politician or an arrogant billionaire. He was a highly decorated, fiercely dedicated, and incredibly brave Tier-1 military K9 handler. He had spent his entire adult life serving in the most dangerous, highly classified combat zones across the globe, working side-by-side with the most elite special operations teams in the military.
Two years ago, during a massive, overwhelming ambush in a remote, highly hostile territory, Marcus had made the ultimate sacrifice.
According to the brief, heavily redacted letters the family received, Marcus had intentionally drawn enemy fire, utilizing his K9 partner to detect hidden explosives and clear a path so that his entire pinned-down unit could successfully escape the kill zone. He saved over two dozen American soldiers that day, but he did not make it onto the extraction helicopter.
Before his final, fatal deployment, Marcus had knelt down in their quiet living room and placed the heavy silver eagle necklace around little Lily's neck. He told her that as long as she wore the eagle, he would always be watching over her.
The profound, suffocating grief of losing her hero father was entirely unbearable. But the tragedy didn't stop there.
Just six months after Marcus died, Lily's mother passed away from a sudden, completely unexpected illness, leaving the little girl entirely orphaned and emotionally shattered.
