Chapter 3 - The Cruel Stepfather

Arthur was Lily's uncle by marriage, but he was a man entirely devoid of human empathy or familial loyalty. He was a deeply narcissistic, incredibly greedy political operative who cared absolutely nothing about the grieving little girl.
When Lily was orphaned, Arthur didn't take her in out of love. He aggressively petitioned the courts for full legal custody specifically to gain total, unchecked control over the massive, multi-million-dollar military survivor benefits, life insurance policies, and private trust funds that had been left entirely to the child.
Arthur despised the memory of Marcus. He hated the military, and he absolutely hated the fact that Lily constantly talked about her hero father.
Arthur wanted to completely erase Marcus’s memory from the little girl's mind so he could successfully mold Lily into a silent, obedient, and highly polished high-society prop to parade around at his political fundraising events. He threw away her father's old photographs. He burned the military letters she kept under her pillow. He told the terrified little girl that her father was a failure who had abandoned her, systematically attempting to break her spirit.
But despite the horrific psychological abuse, Lily absolutely refused to take off the silver eagle necklace. It was her only remaining anchor to the man who loved her.
Arthur had tolerated the necklace in private, but tonight was different. Tonight was a massive, incredibly important high-society gala, and Arthur wanted his "new daughter" to look absolutely perfect for the wealthy donors and politicians in the room. He didn't want them asking questions about the tarnished military dog tag hanging around her neck.
