Chapter 5 - The Bark

Close-up: Standing entirely motionless at the very far end of the grand white marble hall, silhouetted against the heavy oak entrance doors, was a massive, incredibly powerful German Shepherd.

The dog possessed a thick, beautiful dark coat, highly intelligent, hyper-focused eyes, and the rigid, absolutely flawless posture of a highly trained, elite military working dog. The massive animal was wearing a thick, dark blue tactical harness that looked entirely out of place among the crystal chandeliers and the formal gowns.

The German Shepherd looked forward intently, its sharp eyes scanning the massive crowd with surgical precision. It let out one more incredibly loud, deep, and commanding bark that echoed powerfully off the marble floors.

Arthur scoffed, dropping his hand from Lily's neck. "Who let a filthy animal into my gala? Security! Get that mutt out of here immediately before it ruins the carpet!"

The security guards began to move forward, fully intending to aggressively drag the massive dog out of the hall.

But they didn't even make it three steps.

Stepping slowly out of the shadows, walking directly behind the massive German Shepherd, was a man who commanded absolute, unquestioned respect.

He was a man in his late fifties or early sixties, possessing short, neat grey hair and a sharply trimmed grey beard. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He was wearing a completely flawless, highly formal, and incredibly intimidating full-dress military uniform, absolutely covered from his chest to his shoulder in rows of heavy, glittering combat medals.

He was a Four-Star General.
