Chapter 8 - The Loyal Translator

The chaotic, violent energy completely evaporated from the luxury dining room. The remaining guests were ushered out silently by Dante's men.
I was leaning heavily against the mahogany table, my vision blurring as the adrenaline finally wore off. The pain in my chest was excruciating. I squeezed my eyes shut, expecting to collapse.
Suddenly, strong, warm arms wrapped around my shoulders.
Dante didn't call for another maid. The towering, feared mafia boss gently scooped me up into his arms, completely ignoring the dark red blood staining his expensive black suit.
"Stay with me, Emily," Dante urged, his deep voice cracking with raw, profound concern. "The private doctor is already in the medical wing."
He carried me down the hall, holding me as carefully as if I were made of fragile glass.
When I woke up hours later, I was lying in a massive, plush bed in one of the luxury guest suites. My chest was expertly stitched and bandaged. The agonizing pain had faded to a dull ache.
Sitting in a chair beside the bed, watching over me like a silent guardian, was Dante.
He leaned forward when he saw my eyes open. The cold, terrifying executioner was completely gone.
"You saved my life, Emily," Dante whispered, his intense eyes filled with overwhelming respect and deep gratitude. "You stood in a room full of monsters, bleeding to death, and you didn't back down. I have never seen loyalty like that."

I swallowed hard, pulling the heavy blankets up. "I was just doing my job, Mr. Moretti."
