Chapter 6 - The Perfect Mask

David moved with blinding speed. He shoved the folder and the burner phone deep into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. He threw the plush caterpillars back under the bed just as the bedroom door handle clicked.
Amber walked in, looking exhausted and visibly on edge. She stared at David, searching his face for any sign of anger.
“David?” Amber asked nervously, her voice trembling slightly. “Are you okay? Noah was just making up stories... you know how he gets.”
David looked at his beautiful, treacherous wife. The woman he had loved, trusted, and provided for. The woman who was planning to destroy his entire existence.
He didn't scream. He didn't confront her.
David smiled. It was a perfectly warm, chillingly normal smile.
“I know, honey,” David lied smoothly, walking over and gently kissing her on the forehead. “Kids say the craziest things. Don't worry about it. Happy birthday.”
Amber physically sagged with sheer relief, completely unaware that she had just kissed a grim reaper.
The next morning, David woke up early. He made Amber coffee. He kissed Noah goodbye. He acted like the perfect, loving husband. But the second he drove away from the house, he didn't go to his software company.
