Chapter 3 - The Suspicious Chief

Marco stared down at the blue-collar clinic worker. A man didn't survive at the absolute apex of the criminal underworld by ignoring desperate warnings from terrified civilians.

He didn't order his men to fire. He raised a single, trembling hand, signaling his security team to hold their weapons.

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Victor’s face in the background.

The Security Chief stopped dead in his tracks. When Elena mentioned a betrayal, Victor’s expression violently shifted. His cold, professional anger completely vanished, instantly replaced by genuine, panicked paranoia. He tightened his grip on his weapon, stepping subtly closer to the center of the room, preparing to eliminate the threat himself.

"What do you know?" Marco gasped, leaning slightly against the marble banister, the pain in his chest threatening to drop him to the floor.

Elena swallowed hard. She had been hired a week ago to monitor Marco’s sudden, unexplained heart palpitations. The private doctors claimed it was just severe stress.

But Elena had spent ten years as a trauma nurse before she was laid off. She knew the horrific, undeniable symptoms of slow, methodical ricin poisoning.

"You aren't stressed, Mr. Duca," Elena whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward Victor in the background. "You are being poisoned. And it isn't in your food. I checked the kitchen logs. It's absorbing directly through your skin."
