Chapter 1 - The Shattered Tray

The Cedar Post Steakhouse was a cinematic display of warm, ambient lighting and quiet, upscale dining. Blurred city lights glowed beautifully through the massive glass windows as wealthy patrons enjoyed their expensive wine. But the calm, sophisticated atmosphere was about to be violently shattered by a ghost from the past.

Jason, a forty-one-year-old former police deputy with short dark hair and subtle stubble, was kneeling beside a booth. He wore a dark grey jacket over a black button-down shirt. A toddler at the next table had started crying over a spilled glass of ice water. Acting on pure, ingrained paternal instinct, Jason knelt down, looking the panicked child directly in the eyes.

"Look at me," Jason whispered gently, his deep voice carrying a very specific, calming rhythm. "Not the water. I've got you."

A few feet away, Amanda was walking toward the tables. The thirty-something waitress wore a crisp black collared shirt and a white apron, carrying a massive black serving tray loaded with heavy ceramic plates and wine glasses.

The exact second she heard Jason’s voice, Amanda completely froze.

Her hands went entirely numb. The heavy black serving tray slipped from her trembling fingers, crashing violently onto the hardwood floor. Plates shattered instantly, sending food and glass flying everywhere. But Amanda didn't even flinch. She didn't look at the mess. Her wide, tear-filled eyes were locked entirely on Jason’s back, absolutely paralyzed by a seven-year-old memory.

👉 Jason slowly turned around, entirely unaware that the waitress staring at him was about to rewrite his entire tragic existence.
