Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Healing

Jason took a slow, deep breath. The terrifying, ruthless apex predator completely vanished.

He looked at Amanda, tears of profound, overwhelming relief streaming down his face. The crushing, suffocating weight he had carried for seven agonizing years was completely, permanently lifted from his chest.

Suddenly, the kitchen doors swung open. A beautiful ten-year-old girl with curly dark hair stepped out, holding a coloring book. She walked directly up to Amanda, looking curiously at the tall man crying in the middle of the restaurant.

"Is that him, Mommy?" the little girl asked softly.

Amanda smiled a genuine, breathtakingly warm smile and nodded.

Jason dropped to one knee on the hardwood floor, completely ignoring the shattered plates. He looked at the beautiful, healthy girl he had pulled from the freezing water so long ago. She wasn't a tragedy; she was a brilliant, living miracle.

"She's wanted to meet you for years," Amanda whispered gently.

Jason hugged the little girl, crying openly, completely safe in the knowledge that he was finally, undeniably a hero. Six months later, Jason was fully reinstated as the precinct Captain, and Sterling was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison.
