Chapter 5 - The Toxic Blackmail

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal completely electrified the quiet steakhouse.
"Sterling's men threw us into the back of a private van," Amanda continued, her voice trembling with the heavy weight of the horrific memory. "He knew that if a surviving mother testified that the Mayor was drunk driving, his political career and his multi-million-dollar empire would be permanently destroyed."
Jason clenched his fists on the table, his knuckles turning entirely white. He had spent seven years drowning in depression, entirely abandoning his career in law enforcement because he genuinely believed his incompetence had killed an innocent child.
"Sterling handed me a duffel bag with a hundred thousand dollars," Amanda whispered coldly. "He told me that if I ever returned to the city, or if I ever told the police what happened, he would ensure my daughter disappeared permanently. He forged our death certificates to close the case."
"And the Sheriff helped him," Jason realized aloud, a cold, demonic fury completely overriding his sadness.
The Sheriff had forced Jason to resign in absolute disgrace, publicly blaming the deputy's "reckless rescue attempt" for the deaths, completely destroying Jason's reputation to ensure nobody ever looked closely at the crash.
